Erfoud is an oasis town, located at the entrance of Sahara Desert. This is a place of fossil excavations, dates market, and ksars, traditional local villages. Let’s see around this quiet oasis with our native Erfoud driver!
1) Departure from your hotel/riad, visit Ksar Maadid
Pickup hotel/riad is either in Erfoud or Merzouga. The 1st visit is Ksar Maadid, the biggest ksar in Erfoud.
Ksar is a traditional residential complex. The inside is divided into small cells and a lot of families live in the same building.
This is a street inside the ksar. There are not so many windows with a ksar, to avoid strong sunshine in the desert area. On each side of the street, you can find rooms for different families.
2) Lunch with local family
During the tour, a local family will invite you for lunch, which will be tajine or couscous. Also, you can enjoy bread baked in a traditional stone oven, tasty olives, and local fresh fruits.
3) Visit souk, a local market in the city
After the lunch, visit souk in the center of the city. Herbs and cosmetics will be a good gift, and just seeing fresh vegetables is also very interesting. For your information, chickens are sold alive here!
And the highlight of the souk is shining dates! The dates here is the biggest and the sweetest in Morocco. Every autumn, international dates festival is held here in Erfoud.
4) Visit underground water pipes in El Khotarat
Drive about 30 minutes away from the town, you’ll see a remain of the underground water pipes. This used to be an important facility for agriculture in the desert. Now you can walk in that pipes, a kind of an exciting experience!
5) Visit Sky Stairs in the desert
Near the water pipes, you’ll find a huge pyramid shaped building, which is a part of a German artist’s artwork. Mr Hannsjörg Voth built 3 interesting complex in the middle of nowhere, one of them is this pyramid, “Sky Stairs”. It’s not well know yet, but worth visiting. You can get inside the building and actually, there’s a room to live here!
6) Drive back to Erfoud, drop off at your hotel/riad in Erfoud or Merzouga
